Price and cost of ownership of Agilent 5975C Inert XL Turbo Pump TAD Triple-Axis MSD G3172A

The Agilent 5975C Inert XL Triple-Axis MSD with Turbo Pump (Model G3172A) is a highly reliable and sensitive mass spectrometer designed for demanding GC/MS applications. A new system costs around $94,000, while a refurbished unit is available for about $23,000, representing a substantial savings while maintaining strong analytical capabilities. The 5975C Inert XL features enhanced chemical inertness, a turbo molecular pump for faster evacuations and stable high-vacuum operation, and the Triple-Axis Detector (TAD) design that improves signal-to-noise ratio for trace-level detection. It's widely used in environmental analysis, food safety, forensic toxicology, and industrial quality control settings. Ongoing ownership costs include consumables such as ion source parts, filaments, GC columns, carrier gases (helium or hydrogen), and periodic maintenance of the turbo pump system. Software updates and preventative service are important to maximize uptime and ensure consistent performance. Choosing a certified refurbished Agilent 5975C Inert XL MSD allows labs to access high-end analytical performance at a fraction of the new price—ideal for organizations seeking to expand their GC/MS capabilities without exceeding their equipment budgets.

Versatile GC-MS Analysis with the Agilent 5975C Inert XL MSD

The Agilent 5975C Inert XL Turbo Pump Triple-Axis MSD (G3172A) is a mass spectrometer designed to operate in tandem with compatible Agilent gas chromatographs, including the 6890N, 7890A, and 7890B models. It is not a standalone system but forms part of a complete GC-MS setup when integrated with one of these gas chromatographs. Together, the system is widely used for analyzing chemical compounds in complex samples such as water, soil, pharmaceuticals, and food products. The 6890N supports reliable routine testing, while the more advanced 7890B provides enhanced speed and automation for high-throughput laboratory environments. The 5975C MSD supports various sample introduction techniques depending on the analytical application. With a standard inlet and liquid autosampler, it enables testing for residual solvents, pesticides, and pharmaceutical impurities. When coupled with a purge and trap concentrator, the system efficiently handles volatile organic compound (VOC) analysis in water samples. Headspace samplers allow the system to meet USP <467> Procedure B, which requires GC-MS for the identification and confirmation of residual solvents in drug products. Additional inlet configurations, such as PTV or split/splitless options, provide further flexibility for handling thermally labile or low-level analytes. This GC-MS configuration supports multiple validated methods. EPA Method 8015 utilizes it to detect non-halogenated volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in soil and waste samples. EPA Methods 502.2 and 524.3 rely on purge and trap sampling to measure VOCs in drinking water, which the system performs efficiently when paired with concentrators like the Tekmar Atomx. EPA Method 8270D requires sensitive detection of semi-volatiles in environmental matrices, a task well supported by the 5975C’s performance. The system is also widely used in AOAC pesticide residue methods, where it delivers accurate quantification of trace pesticides in food products. Its inert flow path and robust turbo pump ensure consistent, dependable operation for these demanding analytical workflows.
