Price and cost of ownership of Agilent 6890N 5975 GC/MS System w/ Tekmar Atomx XYZ Trap & Purge

Investing in the Agilent 6890N GC with 5975 Mass Selective Detector, paired with a Tekmar Atomx XYZ Purge & Trap System, offers a robust solution for volatile organic compound (VOC) analysis in water, soil, and air matrices. A new system costs around $101,000, while a refurbished unit is available for approximately $50,000, providing significant savings while maintaining analytical performance. The Agilent 6890N GC is a proven workhorse known for its stability, precision, and ease of use. When coupled with the 5975 MSD, it delivers reliable mass spectral data, suitable for trace-level detection. The Tekmar Atomx XYZ combines an autosampler with a purge and trap concentrator, streamlining sample prep and increasing throughput for EPA Method 524.2, 624, and similar standards. Ownership costs include helium or nitrogen carrier gases, trap replacement, GC/MS consumables (filaments, liners, columns, septa), and maintenance of the Atomx XYZ unit. Periodic cleaning and calibration ensure long-term data accuracy and system longevity. For environmental labs or water quality testing facilities, a certified refurbished 6890N/5975 GC-MS with Atomx XYZ offers a powerful, cost-effective solution for VOC analysis—balancing dependable performance with a lower capital investment.

Precision Purge-and-Trap GC/MS Analysis for VOC Detection and Regulatory Compliance

The Agilent 6890N 5975 GC/MS System with Tekmar Atomx XYZ Purge and Trap is often used in labs to find and measure volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in water, soil, and air samples. These VOCs can be harmful chemicals like solvents or industrial pollutants. The purge and trap unit pulls these chemicals out of the sample and sends them into the gas chromatograph, which separates them. Then, the mass spectrometer identifies and measures each one, even in tiny amounts. This system is commonly used in environmental labs to test drinking water, wastewater, and soil to make sure they are safe. It’s also used in pharmaceutical and food testing to check for leftover solvents or unwanted chemicals. Because it can detect very small amounts and works automatically, it’s great for labs that need reliable results for government rules, like EPA Methods. The Agilent 6890N 5975 GC/MS System paired with the Tekmar Atomx XYZ Purge and Trap is commonly used for environmental methods like EPA 8260B, EPA 524.2, and EPA 524.3, which focus on detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs). EPA 8260B is used for testing VOCs in soil and water, while EPA 524.2 and 524.3 are designed for measuring these compounds specifically in drinking water. These methods require a purge and trap system to extract VOCs efficiently from samples and a GC/MS system to separate and identify them at very low levels. This configuration provides the sensitivity, accuracy, and automation needed to meet strict regulatory standards.
