✅This listing is for a GeneStudio S5 Semiconductor Sequencer. The system was under active use until 2022. It was removed and properly de-installed working. We performed a full internal instrument clean with the S5 system and the chef. We had a set of consumables (past expiry now) that we performed the basic testing with.

Sequencer passed the following tests:
Chip Calibration (PASSED)
Noise Test (PASSED)
Reagent Check (PASSED)

Price and cost of ownership of Life Technologies Ion Torrent GeneStudio S5 Sequencer Chef System w/ Consumables

The Life Technologies Ion Torrent GeneStudio S5 Sequencer with Ion Chef System is a powerful next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform designed for targeted sequencing applications such as oncology, inherited disease research, and microbial genomics. A new setup with consumables costs around $90,000, while a refurbished system can be acquired for approximately $55,000, offering a cost-effective entry into high-throughput genomic analysis. The GeneStudio S5 delivers fast, scalable sequencing with flexible chip options to match throughput needs, while the Ion Chef System automates library preparation and template loading—streamlining workflow and reducing hands-on time. Together, they provide an end-to-end solution for consistent and reliable sequencing runs. Beyond the initial purchase, ongoing expenses include reagents, sequencing chips, library prep kits, and consumables, which can add significantly to operational costs depending on run frequency and sample volume. Periodic maintenance, service contracts, and software updates (especially for compliance and data security in clinical or regulated settings) are additional considerations. For research labs, hospitals, or diagnostics providers looking to integrate a robust and efficient NGS platform, investing in a refurbished GeneStudio S5 + Chef System offers strong value—especially when backed by validation, warranty, and technical support from an experienced refurbisher.

Ion Torrent GeneStudio S5 System – End-to-End Sequencing for High-Throughput Applications

The Life Technologies Ion Torrent GeneStudio S5 Sequencer with Ion Chef System is a high-performance next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform designed for fast, cost-effective, and high-throughput genomic analysis. It is widely used in clinical research, oncology, inherited disease screening, microbiome profiling, and targeted sequencing. The system automates key processes—including library preparation, template amplification, and chip loading—reducing hands-on time and increasing run-to-run consistency. The Ion Chef streamlines sample preparation and setup, helping laboratories achieve reproducible results with improved throughput and minimal risk of manual error. While the GeneStudio S5 with Ion Chef automates much of the sequencing workflow, it is not a standalone solution. It requires integration with other laboratory instruments such as thermocyclers, centrifuges, and quantification tools like Qubit or Bioanalyzer, as well as downstream bioinformatics platforms for data analysis. This system is widely adopted in validated protocols including CDC- and WHO-aligned infectious disease surveillance (e.g., SARS-CoV-2 genome sequencing), oncology gene panels, pharmacogenomics, and microbial identification within FDA and CLIA-regulated frameworks. It also supports applications in inherited disease diagnostics and targeted cancer genomics, offering the sensitivity, scalability, and speed required for both research and clinical validation environments.
